When should I use a heat sink?
Heat generating components such as voltage regulators, microprocessors, and power amplifiers will often use heatsinks to help manage any heat generated. It should always be remembered that a heat sink should not be placed on a component without using a Thermal Interface Material such as a Void or Gap Filler or a Thermal Tape. Air is a very poor thermal conductor so these materials help remove any air gap between the component and the heat sink.
